'Black Panther' Star Winston Duke Reveals That The Audition Process Was So Secretive That He Had No Idea It Was Even A Marvel Film

Many Marvel fans first got to know actor Winston Duke as M'Baku, leader of the Jabari tribe in Black Panther.

In a new interview with Metro, Duke opened up about the audition process for his breakout role, which was far more secretive than many people would imagine.

Duke told Metro:

"I would have cut a finger nail off to work with any of the people individually, then being in a movie with all of them? That was out of this world. And I didn't even know what I was doing, I didn't know what movie it was in the audition."

Wait...Duke didn't know what movie he was auditioning for?

"They didn't tell you so I auditioned without knowing what movie I was auditioning for. They were fake scripts! You just sign a non-disclosure agreement and then they send you sides (a part of a script provided to actors for use in an audition) that they just wrote, and you memorize it and work on it and flush it out and create character and go in and do your things."

The moment the actor realized what he was trying out for was an illuminating one:

"I had no idea until I had a director session the third time around and saw it was Ryan Coogler, and I was like 'ohhhh, lightbulb!'"

Marvel is famously secretive about their audition process—many other stars have shared similar stories about not knowing what they were auditioning for until very late in the process.

Duke is far from done with the MCU.

He appeared as M'Baku again in Avengers: Infinity War, is listed on the IMBD cast list for Avengers: Endgame and will most likely play a large role in the forthcoming Black Panther sequel.
