NASA's "Perseverance" Mars rover officially landed on the red planet's surface. It will begin a two-year mission of searching for ancient microbial life on the planet as well as some test runs for techonology that could later pave the way for humans to colonize Mars.
When it landed, it sent out a picture of its "forever home," the celestial body itself.
This is a momentous occasion in humanity's curiosity about space.
Though the earthbound humans of Twitter couldn't resist memeing the heck out of the rover's landing.
The memes ranged from Ted Cruz returning from Mexico in disgrace to Bernie Sanders in his chair, to little green men.
It's astounding how creative the internet can be.
There are several ways the mission helps pave the way for future human expeditions to Mars and demonstrates technologies that may be used in those endeavours," reads the Mars Rover's official website.
"These include testing a method for producing oxygen from the Martian atmosphere, identifying other resources (such as subsurface water), improving landing techniques, and characterizing weather, dust, and other potential environmental conditions that could affect future astronauts living and working on Mars."
The rover itself is equipped with more audio and visual equipment than just the two shots we were shown on Twitter. If we find anything new and exciting, we will surely get the photos faster than anything else.
And Twitter will surely meme them.
