Texas State Rep. Venton Jones dropped to one knee and proposed to his longtime partner, Gregory Scott Jr., just moments after being sworn in as a crowd of onlookers cheered.

Democratic Texas State Representative Venton Jones started the 89th legislative session by getting down on bended knee to propose to his partner, Gregory Scott Jr.

And he said yes!

The sweet proposal happened moments after Jones was sworn in.

A video of the engagement showed enthusiastic peers observing the Vice Chair of the Texas LGBTQ Caucus putting a ring on Scott Jr.'s finger during House recess.

Scott Jr. told his fiancé, "You got me," as they embraced, to which Jones confirmed he did catch his beau off guard with the happy surprise.

The clip ended with Scott Jr. showing off the ring at the request of an elated colleague.

Jones shared the clip on X (formerly Twitter), which he proudly captioned, "He said yes!" followed by a diamond ring emoji.

This is Jones' second term in the Texas State House. He was elected to his first term in 2022 to represent HD 100, which includes parts of South Dallas, West Dallas, East Dallas, Buckner Terrace, Victory Park, and Oak Cliff.

In a statement, Jones said:

"In a time when our love and our very existence are challenged, often in the halls of this very building, this moment is a reminder that love conquers all."
"Gregory and I stand as proof that progress is unstoppable, and no amount of hate can erase the truth of who we are."

The internet was beaming for the newly-engaged couple.

The incumbent state lawmaker who is known for his advocacy for Black gay men and those with HIV continued:

"I plan on using my power as the House Democratic Caucus Whip and Vice-Chair of the LGBTQ Caucus to protect all Texans."

He added:

"Our love symbolizes resilience and our story reminds us that love can and will always overcome hate."

Congratulations to the happy couple!
