Tom Holland Left Speechless After Learning How Close 'Spider-Man' Is To Overtaking 'Avatar' At Box Office

Tom Holland Left Speechless After Learning How Close 'Spider-Man' Is To Overtaking 'Avatar' At Box Office

Spider-Man star Tom Holland just received some exciting news during a live virtual interview, and his genuinely surprised reaction reminded fans why they adore the humbled A-lister.

Hot off the ongoing global box-office dominance of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the highly in-demand actor was promoting his new action flick Uncharted on BackstageOL when he was apprised of the news.

But before getting into his new action-adventure film based on the eponymous video game, interviewer Dave Morales congratulated Holland on the phenomenon of one of the hottest Marvel franchises.

“The other movie that you have playing right now, very soon to be the biggest movie of all time. … Let's start right there,” said Morales.

“How does that make you feel, you know, the dream of becoming an actor, and you’re this close to having the biggest movie of all time, how does that make you feel?”

The incredulous actor glanced at someone off-camera and said, “I think we’re a bit a ways away from the biggest movie of all time, right?”

Holland is correct as the 27th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)–which grossed over $737 million domestically–has a bit further to go before becoming the "biggest movie of all time," as Morales described.

That distinction is currently held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which has a domestic gross of a whopping $936 million. No Way Home is $200 million shy of reaching that mark; however, it is on track to overtake James Cameron's Avatar for third-highest-grossing film domestically at the U.S. box office.

Marvel's Avengers: Endgame holds the second spot for highest lifetime gross with over $858 million.

When Morales confirmed the latest Spider-Man film was close to surpassing Avatar's $760 million mark, Holland was gobsmacked, and his initial response was "Holy sh*t."

"Wow, that's incredible," Holland continued.

"I didn't know that. Honestly. That's amazing!"

As he tried wrapping his head around the news, he said it was "mind-blowing," and he credited the success of the latest Spider-Man sequel to the film's director.

“I think what Jon Watts has done so well with these movies is when we’re making them they feel small, they feel so heartfelt and they feel like we’re making these really intricate, independent movies."
“And when they come out you’re always pleasantly surprised that they are not small in any way shape or form.”

"I could talk for hours about how grateful I am for this opportunity," he said.

Holland is well aware of the pop-cultural phenomenon that is Spider-Man and the positive impact his character and the films have had on devoted Spidey fans around the world.

“We have had people from all different walks of life come together and sit in the same theater and watch the same movie and feel the same emotions. It honestly feels amazing to be a part of that.”

As far as what the future may hold for him and the franchise, Holland is not so sure he would be donning the red and blue spandex suit again for more web-slinging adventures, given the rocky relationship between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios.

Last November, Sony Pictures franchise producer Amy Pascal teased another Spider-Man trilogy was in the works in an unofficial announcement.

Pascal told Fandango:

“We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel. We're thinking of this as three films, and now we're going to go onto the next three."

"This is not the last of our MCU movies," she assured fans.

But, according to Holland, he said his future with Spider-Man remained uncertain although there have been conversations.

On February 1, Holland told Entertainment Weekly:

“We've had conversations about the potential future of Spider-Man, but at the moment they are conversations. We don't know what the future looks like.”

He added that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Sony head Tom Rothman were “thinking of something” with Pascal but couldn't confirm what that entailed.

Uncharted, directed by Ruben Fleischer, also stars Mark Wahlberg; with Sophia Ali, Tati Gabrielle, and Antonio Banderas in supporting roles.

It is scheduled for a February 18 release in the U.S.

Trump Gives Mind-Numbing Reason For Why He Voted By Mail-In Ballot After Railing Against It

Although he regularly claims mail-in ballots are used by Democrats to rig elections, President Donald Trump was called out for voting by mail in Florida's election on Tuesday—and saying it's okay that he did it because he's the "president."

Palm Beach County records show that Trump cast a mail-in ballot earlier this week in the special election for Florida’s House District 87, the district that includes his Mar-a-Lago residence. He also voted by mail in the January primary for the same race.
