Red Wine Floods Small Portuguese Town After Distillery's Massive Storage Tanks Burst

Video of the flash flood of wine rushing down São Lourenço do Bairro's streets went viral after two storage tanks at the Destilaria Levira distillery burst.

The small town of São Lourenço do Bairro in Portugal had a flood over the weekend, but this flood wasn’t made of water. It was wine. 580,000 gallons of it, streaming down the streets of the town from the distillery up the hill.

The distillery, Destilaria Levira, said they were holding the extra volume of wine due to European Union rules on oversupply. The distillery has said that it takes responsibility and will help fix damage caused by the flood.

In videos of the event, the wine river was so powerful that it formed small rapids as it turned the corner of a street.

The jokes started strong, with people pointing out what a sudden flow of unwanted red reminded them of.

Obviously, people pointed out that some wine moms could take care of this problem ASAP.

Some folks ran with the joke in the direction of…Ancient Greece?

Others went for a different ancient times reference.

Others kept it more modern. Sort of.

Finally were the people thinking the really important thoughts: what would it taste like?

No one was injured in the accident.
