The actor, who hails from Lewiston, Maine, took to Instagram to share his grief following the mass shooting that killed 18 people.

Actor Patrick Dempsey expressed his profound sadness and shock on Instagram following the tragic shootings in his hometown of Lewiston, Maine. The incident resulted in 18 fatalities and left 13 others injured.

The shooting spanned two different locations: a bar and a bowling alley, with numerous individuals sustaining injuries in the incident, according to law enforcement sources. The shooter was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a two-day manhunt.

Dempsey reflected on the close-knit sense of community in Maine, a defining strength of the state. He emphasized the need for the community to come together and support the victims and their families during this difficult time.

Dempsey's connection to Lewiston is deep-rooted, as he was born in the city and spent his formative years in nearby towns like Turner and Buckfield.

He wrote:

“I am shocked, and deeply saddened by last night’s tragedy in my hometown, Lewiston, Maine."
“Maine’s great strength is it’s sense of community, and now we are being asked to come together to support everyone that has been devastated by this senseless act. My family and I are heartbroken for the victims, their families, and the community."

Fans of the actor—best known for his role on the series Grey's Anatomy—also shared their sympathies for him and for the members of his community.

In addition to his acting career, Dempsey established the Dempsey Center in 2008 in honor of his mother, Amanda, who battled ovarian cancer. The center offers personalized and comprehensive cancer care at no cost and operates two locations in Lewiston and South Portland, Maine.

In light of the recent shootings, the Dempsey Center temporarily closed both its Lewiston and South Portland locations as a precautionary measure.

We're sending all of our thoughts to the victims and their loved ones as they deal with such devastating loss and trauma.
