New Mom's Massive Hospital Bill From Her Baby's Birth Sparks Outrage Over U.S. Healthcare System

New Mom's Massive Hospital Bill From Her Baby's Birth Sparks Outrage Over U.S. Healthcare System

TikToker Shannon Mayor (@shannonmayor) recently gave birth, but her joy quickly turned to shock.

After giving birth to a healthy baby—albeit, with a few minor complications—Mayor was slapped with a hospital bill that made her jaw drop.

The bill was for over $51,000.

The TikTok, captioned "I wasn't expecting the total to be that high," shows Mayor facepalming over the hospital bill.

The text overlay reads:

"Holy sh*t you guys I just got our hospital bill from my baby's birth."

The video, which is only 12 seconds long but has yielded over 6.7 million views, shows the hospital bill total, how much of the bill her insurance plan covered, and how much of the bill she had to pay out of pocket.

Mayor's insurance plan, Blue Cross Blue Shield--covered the vast majority of the bill and left her paying only $250 out of pocket.

Mayor mentioned in the comments:

"Insurance details since I saw a lot of comments asking… this is blue cross blue shield PPO in California. I got it through my old job."

The astronomical cost of her childbirth procedure before her insurance coverage, however, led to outrage on the video sharing platform.

California—where Mayor gave birth—is rated one of the most expensive states to give birth in across the US.

In fact, according to CBS, the average cost of giving birth in a California hospital is $26,380, which is 75% higher than the national average for expenditure.

Additionally, the cost of hospital room and board alone in a California hospital adds another $10,000 to the bill.

TikTok users expressed their disgust over the ridiculous cost of medical care in the United States.

Mayor was upset over the hospital bill, but ultimately said:

"We had a few complications and I still get sad that I didn't have the birth I hoped for but I'm so grateful for my healthy baby."

White House Slammed After Replacing Obama Portrait With Painting Of Trump's Assassination Attempt

The White House is facing heavy criticism after it posted a video on X showing off a new painting of President Donald Trump's assassination attempt last summer—that is now hanging where an official portrait of former President Barack Obama was once displayed.

The portrait of Obama, unveiled in 2022 during former President Joe Biden’s administration, remains on display in the White House but has been relocated. Originally hung near the staircase to the presidential residence on the State Floor, it has been moved to the opposite wall—where a portrait of former President George W. Bush once hung.
