Mindy Kaling is being slammed by some after her Good Morning America interview in which she claimed the United States version ofThe Office probably wouldn't make the cut for today's TV.
Kaling—who was an actor, writer, director and producer on the show—shared:
"That show is so inappropriate now."
"The writers who I'm still in touch with now, we always talk about how so much of that show we probably couldn't make now."
She explained "tastes have changed," and "what offends people has changed so much now."
As for the show's continued popularity, she said:
"I think that actually is one of the reasons the show is popular—because people feel like there's something kind of fearless about it or taboo that it talks about on the show."

Some agreed—sarcastically—with Kaling's statements regarding the show.
“this is true, its impossible to find reruns of the office anywhere bc of cancel culture”— Andrew Lawrence (@Andrew Lawrence) 1670345858
“Today's young people would never accept The Office, a show so inappropriate you can only find it by turning on Comedy Central at any time of day ever.”— Joe Berkowitz (@Joe Berkowitz) 1670342499
Timeless show one of a kind and yes today's viewers would not be able to handle the satire

Of course, there were also several who disagreed, one even going as far as to accuse Kaling of "lying."
“at any point during the day, The Office is playing on a tv channel somewhere and nbc created an entire streaming app basically around people watching The Office, seems like no one today has a problem with it”— ashley ray (@ashley ray) 1670340997
“All celebrities do is sit around and lie about cancel culture. The office is almost on a 24 hour loop on TV….TODAY”— Riley Freeman (@Riley Freeman) 1670342409
And while some agreed the characters on the show were offensive in many ways, they claimed that was kind of the point—to exploit ignorance.
“@Phil_Lewis_ Wasn’t that the point though? lol They all exhibited cringe-worthy behavior and the audience KNEW it was over the top and therefore it was… Well… Funny. lol It was like holding up a fun house mirror and seeing silly office behaviors we all know to be done but shouldn’t.”— philip lewis (@philip lewis) 1670343810
“@TheDRDotson @Phil_Lewis_ Right- nobody was trying to be like these characters.

It was supposed to show all the uncomfortable and inappropriate behaviors everyone encounters even today. It gave us a safe space to laugh about them.”— philip lewis (@philip lewis) 1670343810
As for the future of her Office character Kelly, Kaling shared:
"I think she would have quit Dunder Mifflin to become an influencer."
"And then probably be canceled almost immediately."
