We are deep in awards season at this point, with the Oscars barely a month and a half away and many are happy to see some of "the little movies that could" getting the recognition and nominations they deserve (looking at you Everything Everywhere All at Once).
On the other end of the spectrum, however, there are some notable names and films absent from the Oscar nominations that were revealed last week. Many Black films, filmmakers and actors were noticeably snubbed as well as women directors. Also missing from this year's nominations is the entire horror genre - yes, including Jordan Peele's Nope - although unfortunately, that doesn't come as a surprise to many, including horror film star Mia Goth.
Goth, who starred in Ty West's horror Xtrilogy, most recently Pearl, was asked by Jake Hamilton about the snub.
Goth, sitting beside Alexander Skarsgård as they make the rounds promoting Infinity Pool, poignantly responded:
"I think that it's very political, and it's not entirely based on the quality of a project, per se."
"I think there's a lot going on there. A lot of cooks in the kitchen when it comes to nominations... and categories that are recognized."
"I don't know, maybe I shouldn't say that, either..."
Making a solid point, Goth added:
"I think a change is necessary, a shift should take place."
"If they want to engage with the wider public, it would be of benefit, really."
“I spoke with Mia Goth about not getting a (very deserved) Best Actress Oscar nomination for PEARL — and why the Academy doesn’t take the horror genre seriously enough.”— Jake Hamilton (@Jake Hamilton) 1674690422
Many on Twitter agreed with Goth's perspective.
Not even a little bit surprised about the Oscar’s snubbing horror I’d die of shock if they didn’t snub a horror movie at this point

Only 6 Horror films have ever been nominated for Best Picture pic.twitter.com/1b7pB5HxUc

A lot of people do know that.
An example of this is “Parisite”, BECAUSE of the current Hollywood movement of inclusion I feel it won.
The fans loved the movie as it was, and I did too, but if this wasn’t a movement in HW rn, they would’ve never even nominated it. SAD.

She is not wrong. And look at the handsome Alexander Skarsgård, looking as good as ever.

Many agreed with host Jake Hamilton's assertion in the interview that Goth deserved a nomination for her performance.
SO GLAD you asked her that, Jake. She definitely deserved a nomination!

She was my favorite performance from 2022 other than Michelle Yeoh. It was undeniably brilliant what she did.

Yeah, she definitely should've been nominated for Pearl.

She was amazing in Pearl and rightfully deserves a nomination. Instead they nominate Ana for that abysmal Marilyn movie.
Such a shame. Mia Gothqas definitely the best performance of the year in my opinion.

The way the Academy feels about horror flicks, however, is not going to stop Goth from pursuing her passion.
She recently shared in an interview with The Playlist:
"I'm aware that the material is challenging and might be regarded as provocative, but those are the kinds of movies I enjoy watching!"
"And they're also the kind, ultimately, that I want to make. I want to be involved with projects and filmmakers that push me."
"I like pushing myself. Generally, life is quite complicated, and I seek out movies reflecting that."
