Men Who Killed 16-Year-Old Boy For Stealing Sunflowers Learn Their Fate

We're following a tragic and appalling story out of South Africa, where two men have been found guilty of killing a 16-year-old after throwing him out of a moving van for stealing sunflowers.

The two farmers, Pieter Doorewaard and Phillip Schutte, discovered young Matlhomola Jonas Mosweu picking sunflowers at their worksite and apparently kidnapped him.

At some point, Mosweu was tossed from their moving van, fatally injuring him.

Their punishment was doled out:

Twitter users had a lot to say about the crime and the punishment:

People are debating the motivation behind this shocking murder.

Some doubt South Africa's legal system will deliver a strong enough sentence.

This might be the truck used in the murder.

Moshoue's father, Sakkie, commented on the verdict.

This should go without saying, but nobody deserves to lose their life over picking a few sunflowers. Many people agree no sentence will be enough to right the horrible wrong they've committed.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Matlhomola Jonas Mosweu.
