If there's one thing Americans know how to do, it's rebel from British authority. And it looks like Meghan Markle is continuing that tradition, despite marrying into the royal family.

At the British Fashion Awards this week, Meghan Markle made a surprise appearance. She was there to present an award to her designer, Clare Waight Keller, who designed Markle's wedding dress.

But it was something else that caught the news' attention.

Markle was wearing dark colored nail polish!

According to reports, Queen Elizabeth II prefers a sheer pink color for her nails, and as the matriarch, other royals will wear light or nude colors out of respect. It is not a hard rule, but it is an assumed guideline.

But that didn't stop Meghan from rocking it!

While it isn't an official protocol, there is some weight behind the nail polish ban.

Omid Scobie, a royal correspondent told Harper's BAZAAR,

"It's simply about being appropriate—we'd never see this at a royal engagement. But tonight's event is a celebration of fashion and there's a lot more flexibility on what one can wear."

Dark nail polish is one of the things that the media discussed about Meghan Markle when the engagement was announced. How closely these rules are adhered to can vary though.

Though it seems some people want them more closely followed.

At the fashion event, Markle spoke about how fashion can connect and empower women.

"But for me, this connection is rooted in really being able to understand that it's about supporting and empowering each other, especially as women. When we choose to wear a certain designer, we're not just a reflection of their creativity and their vision but we're also an extension of their values -- of something in the fabric, so to speak, that is much more meaningful."
