Man Stopped By Airport Security Over Mystery Christmas Briefcase Grandma Told Him Not To Open

Man gets stopped with mystery suitcase in airport
@brett.gaffney/TikTok

TikToker Brett Gaffney nearly didn't make it through airport security thanks to a briefcase his grandma gave him as an 'early Christmas gift' that he was instructed not to open until he got home.

We've likely all received a gift at some point that, at first, we had no idea what the other person could have possibly been thinking. This must have been a throwaway gift idea when they couldn't think of anything else to get for us, right?

But once we tried the gift out, we realized the genius behind it...

As wholesome as that might be, though, it's probably best not to send the gift recipient through an airport without knowing what the gift is first.

Otherwise they might end up like TikToker @brett.gaffney, who almost wasn't able to board his flight and was worried about getting arrested when his grandma gave him a briefcase and instructed him not to open it until he arrived back home, even though his travels included a flight.

When Gaffney was passing through airport security, he was questioned about the contents of the briefcase, and all he could tell them was:

"I don't know. It's a surprise."

TSE agents obviously did not like that answer and quickly checked the suitcase for what was inside. They didn't keep the surprise for Gaffney, either, and revealed to him what almost made him miss his flight.

At first, he was perplexed by the reveal, but what begins as a funny story quickly turns into a family heirloom saga.

Fortunately for all of us, the story didn't end there.

Upon returning home, Gaffney shared an update as he began exploring the typewriter that had been locked inside the briefcase.

Gaffney needed to pick up a pack of paper to write on, as well as a new typewriter ribbon, as the ink had mostly dried out and was nearly illegible. As a bonus, Gaffney also ordered some lubricating oil to help the keys move more smoothly.

Replying to @Rahshedah the gift of a century?! #brettgaffneyforever #typewriter

In the next video, Gaffney explored the briefcase itself, as some fellow Redditors pointed out that briefcases like this could have hidden pockets and compartments.

Though he did not find any hidden compartments, he did find a two-dollar bill rolled up inside, which was a common gift in his family, always saved and used as bookmarks.

One Redditor recommended using this specific bill as a bookmark in the novel he'd inevitably write on the typewriter, and Gaffney loved that idea.

After learning more about the typewriter, it was clear that Gaffney's excitement for it was growing as he remarked:

"I've always been a big advocate for taking the day off. Like when I was young and I could get the new 'Call of Duty' or I'd get a new Nerf gun or a new toy or something, I'd be like, 'Oh, I'm sick. I can't go to school today!'"
"And now, I have work today, but I'm back from Thanksgiving, and I just got this new thing...I got this typewriter, because I'm becoming an old man, and all I want to do is stay home and type on my typewriter."

When Gaffney finally got the ink ribbon and paper, his relationship with the typewriter was sealed.

Gaffney even started sharing aesthetic typewriter videos.

I didnt think Id use this, but here we are. Its so calming. 🥲 #brettgaffneyforever #xyzba

He might even start a new series called 'Phrase of the Day.'

"If you're feeling stuck...find some glue remover."
@brett.gaffney

Should I make this into a series? #brettgaffneyforever #phraseoftheday

This is the gift that truly keeps on giving—no just for Gaffney, but for all the rest of us who are watching.

Grandma clearly knew what she was doing this holiday season.
