Six white high school students from Alabama are facing serious backlash after they were captured standing on a black student during a school theme day.
According to Indy100, on a school theme day called 'Dallas Day,' the seven students posted the offensive image in question, seen below, with the caption, "We got us one."
Immediately, the internet began responding, noting the tone deaf insensitivity of the photo.
The students, have come forward and they say that the photo was intended to be "making fun of racist people."
"If I could go back, I wouldn't have took the picture," said Austin Glass, the boy in the maroon shirt. "I probably wouldn't have even dressed up for that day."
Nick Fuller, the black student, said: "I'm thinking about it now, but I didn't think about it when we first took the photos. I'd still like to say sorry again for anyone I offended."
Moody High School Principal Christopher Walters told AL.com:
"We have confirmed that all students involved are friends and participated voluntarily in creating the picture, which they say was intended to be a 'joke'. The picture is offensive and unacceptable, and it does not reflect the values of our school, our students, or our community."
The superintendent of the Moody school district, in a statement to Teen Vogue, said: "We will continue to educate our students on the values of dignity, equality, and decency and on the importance of making good decisions in life."
The public remains skeptical.
