Anyone who travels a lot develops tips and tricks to make their journey more enjoyable or to avoid past problems.

This includes travel hacks for hotels.

Reddit user Snowfall_19 asked:

"What are some unspoken rules that you automatically follow when staying in a hotel?"

Equipment Check

"Check to ensure mini fridge is working. Check to ensure shower is working and has hot water. Sounds extreme, but you generally wouldn’t notice issues with these two things until it’s too late."

"Any medications, or food being stored in the mini fridge would be ruined by this point—and if you have issues with your shower, regardless of it being no hot water, no pressure, or other—by the time you discover it in the morning, it’s too late. Same applies to the iron if ironing is needed."

Snack Drawer

"When I was a kid, my family stayed in hotels on vacation only once every other year or so. My parents took one of the drawers in the room and filled it with all kinds of snacks."

"That was 40 years ago, and I always have stuff to set up a snack drawer whenever I get a room even if it's for one night. It's just feels right."

~ StromboliOctopus

Stick To Cafe's

"If the coffee maker is in the bathroom, it’s not getting used."

~ baardvark

"General rule is to avoid coffee makers altogether in hotels and on airplanes. They very, very, very rarely get cleaned."

"And people use them for things other than coffee."

~ PurpleMonkeyMan87

Numbered

"Take a picture of my room # so I can find it later since it's no longer on the key."

~ banan1025

"Always take a pic of the room card envelope in the elevator on the way up so you don’t forget."

~ Mmmbeerisu

"I always tear the room number off the little envelope they give you the card with and tuck it in my wallet."

~ dmr1313

Slamming Doors

"Try not to let the door slam."

~ Icy-Yellow3514

"Stayed at an all inclusive in Mexico. The doors automatically shut and shut loudly unless you slowed them down."

"Every 5 minutes was a door slamming shut. Not a problem when I was at the pool all day."

"At 2am, it was an issue."

~ Hebshesh

Airport Schmootz

"Don’t put your luggage on the bed."

~ openheartdirtymind

"Where has your luggage been rolling/sitting? Do you want all that dirt and other potentially nasty stuff on your bed?"

~ abishop711

To Tuck Or Untuck

"Immediately untuck those tight a** sheets."

~ iviviv_alt

"I love the first night restrained by those sheets."

~ NotTravisKelce

Check For Your Stuff

"This is for when it’s time to check out. Before you leave, make sure to give the sheets a good shake to ensure you didn’t accidentally leave anything on the bed."

"Also check every single drawer or storage space in the room, even if you didn’t use it."

"I’ve never actually left anything behind, but my anxious a** always feels like I’m forgetting something, so I check everything to make sure I didn’t actually do so."

~ Niknak003

Shhhh...

"Don’t be an obnoxious jerk by being loud, no matter what time it is. It’s rude."

"Someone might be trying to sleep so that they can drive thru the night, or they just got done with driving through the night."

~ alm1688

"Or they're piloting an airplane in the next few hours."

~ SilverDad-o

Prep

"Throw your towels in a pile in the bathroom."

~ Fidulsk-Oom-Bard

"Yes! I generally try to do a quick tidy up that may include moving all garbage to the can, sometimes striping the bed and putting the towels in a pile, to make someone's day a little easier."

"I guarantee they are going to have a couple of awful rooms during the week that these gestures, with a small tip, will help balance out."

~ pokamoe

D-N-D

"I spent half the year last year in hotels. Most of it one specific hotel for 1-2 weeks at a time."

My only rule is to put the 'Do not disturb' sign on the door as soon as I get there. I don’t want anyone, including housekeeping, touching my stuff."

~ doom1701

Bare It All Or None

"The floor is lava, not to be touched with bare feet."

~ toby_wan_kenoby

"Hard disagree!"

"Fully nude the moment you're alone in the room."

"Naked bliss."

~ chuby1tubby

Bugging

"Peel the sheets back and check for evidence of bed bugs."

~ Mr_Lumbergh

"Look for redish/brown rust looking spots between the folds of the mattress. If you see it, immediately take a picture, then go downstairs to the front desk."

"Explain you have seen possible evidence of bedbugs and show them the pictures. You can request a new room but understand if there is one room with them, there might be more."

~ angeldestler08

Hallway Etiquette

"Be quiet in the hallways."

~ Any_Context1

"My husband and I were staying in a hotel once and were woken up at 3am by people talking loudly in the hallway."

"When they didn’t move on or quiet down after several minutes, my husband opened the door to ask them to be quiet, and they were SITTING on the floor in the hallway, leaning against the walls of our room, just having a loud 3am conversation."
