TV Network Cuts Homophobic Joke From Original 2002 'Spider-Man' Movie—And Fans Have Thoughts

TV Network Cuts Homophobic Joke From Original 2002 'Spider-Man' Movie—And Fans Have Thoughts
Sony Pictures

A homophobic taunt from Sam Raimi's 2002 Spider-Man movie was cut from a UK broadcast of the film.

The controversial joke was from a scene in which Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker taunts Bonesaw McGraw–played by the late "Macho" Man Randy Savage–in a wrestling match by implying his burly opponent might be gay.

Parker originally quipped:

"That's a cute outfit... did your husband give it to you?"

Twitter user @PaperPlaneTF shared the censored version that aired on the UK channel ITV2 over the weekend, which you can see here.

The modified scene removing the "husband" line is an indication of how much times have changed, where two decades ago, casual digs at the LGBTQ+ community were prevalent without consequences even in family-friendly fare such as Spider-Man.

People had plenty to say about the removed line, including the expected complaints about "wokeness" ruining the film and others arguing it's not that deep.

The tweet also sparked a debate about what is deemed homophobic.

According to Comicbookmovie, this is the first time the homophobic line was removed from this version of the Spider-Man film.

Trump isn't exactly known to be a looker but he has nonetheless declared himself a "perfect physical specimen" and boasted about his physical prowess, once noting that his own White House physician had declared him "healthier than Obama"—despite Trump's distaste for exercise and fondness for fast food.
