Musical artist Grimes is facing backlash for comments she made about the lifestyle habits of her on-and-off-again partner, billionaire Elon Musk.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Grimes tried to explain that the tech mogul and father of her two children does not live the lavish lifestyle associated with the uber-wealthy.
She said:
“Bro does not live like a billionaire."
"Bro lives at times below the poverty line."
"To the point where I was like, can we not live in a very insecure $40,000 house?"
"Where the neighbors, like, film us, and there’s no security, and I’m eating peanut butter for eight days in a row?”
Grimes went on to refute Musk was hoarding his massive amounts of capital.
She said he is using it for "research and development" for his Mars expansion and colonization project. She also shared a story about Musk refusing to get a new mattress when one of theirs had a hole in it.
While Grimes may think she painted a humanizing and down-to-earth picture of her billionaire partner, folks on the internet are not taking the bait. Many people took offense to flippant claims Musk "lives at times below the poverty line."
Poverty, a number of people pointed out, is not a choice.
That Grimes interview is so bad, the whole "Elon lives below the poverty line because he invests in his Mars project for the sake of humanity" is just wild.

When will rich people understand: playing poor is not the same as being poor.— Mare of Elm Street (@Mare of Elm Street) 1647108161
Lol mf doesn’t understand the privilege of having the ability to choosehttps://twitter.com/BuzzFeed/status/1502313402189942785 …— Brian Hanna (@Brian Hanna) 1647105920
I like @Grimezsz sounds, but intellectually, jeez. I don’t think I’ve ever read such bollocks. Perhaps she needs to learn a bit about true poverty about the role a complete lack of choice plays in poverty.https://www.independent.co.uk/tech/grimes-elon-musk-baby-mars-b2033805.html …— (((Brian Capaloff))) #GTTO 💙 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ (@(((Brian Capaloff))) #GTTO 💙 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️) 1647083465
Choosing to "eat peanut butter 8 days in a row" isn't "living below the poverty line." There's a level of anxiety and unsurety that comes with poverty, that Musk will never feel no matter how hard he slums it.

https://www.buzzfeed.com/emilymaeczachor/grimes-elon-musk-doesnt-live-like-a-billionaire?utm_source=dynamic&utm_campaign=bfsharetwitter … via @buzzfeed— Dave Matney (@Dave Matney) 1646951437
One Twitter user said Grimes' statement was "an insult to anyone struggling to put food on the table."
What a load of crap. He can step so far over that line anytime he wants! An insult to anyone struggling to put food on the table...

Grimes says Elon Musk sometimes lives ‘below the poverty line’: “I’m eating peanut butter for eight days in a row”https://www.independent.co.uk/tech/grimes-elon-musk-baby-mars-b2033805.html …— Neilsens Woodwork Service (@Neilsens Woodwork Service) 1647163739
People pointed out frugality or being cheap and poverty are not at all the same thing.
Is anyone going to break the news to Grimes that being cheap is not the same thing as being in poverty oh my God https://twitter.com/VanityFair/status/1501906545029914631 …pic.twitter.com/tXjY0yw62S— Britt (@Britt) 1646933454
One person noted while Grimes and Musk may share a modest living arrangement, that's in no way a destitute or impoverished lifestyle.
Grimes said Elon Musk lives in an “insecure 40,000 house below the poverty line.” This is apparently the house. Like wow. I too live in a studio apartment. pic.twitter.com/igAOaBPmmP— ✨K✨ (@✨K✨) 1647098325
Another follower was not buying Grimes' mattress story.
They pointed out if she took issue with Musk's lifestyle choices, she had plenty of her own resources to fix the problem.
Isn’t Grimes herself a multi-millionaire? So do her and Elon cosplay poverty for fun? For the aesthetics? She could have bought herself a new mattress anytime she wanted. Elon is gross but she’s not broke is still choosing to be with him. https://twitter.com/FemDatStrat/status/1502433682509877249 …pic.twitter.com/F3c1XbzOcJ— Atiya (@Atiya) 1647044531
Another user noted a very important character in this story—the family's nanny, who was present throughout the interview caring for the couple's new baby.
Given most childcare professionals often actually live below the poverty line, this makes Grimes' comment in particularly poor taste.
grimes claiming to live below the poverty line in the same interview where the nanny her and elon hired to parent for them is audibly shushing her secret baby is uhhhh something— asher // acab (@asher // acab) 1647017611
Another person hit Musk where it hurts, suggesting he try taking the bus or flying coach for once.
Living in poverty means you have no safety net and don’t know where your next meal is coming from. It also means taking a bus to travel if your lucky? Maybe Elon can fly coach next time?— Rich Tuttle (@Rich Tuttle) 1647014688
Most people agreed the couple definitely needs a reality check given the number of people across the globe living in truly dire conditions.
I usually love when two weirdos get together and are weirdos together in love but I’m going to need Grimes to shut up about how Elon “lives below” the poverty line when the dude is a billionaire and there is kids starving in every community in the “richest” country in the world— sommer (@sommer) 1646960202
Grimes saying she & Elon lived below the poverty line is an actual joke theyre both so out of touch with reality it’s insane— 888 (@888) 1647173179
Another pointed out the whole situation seems like billionaires just doing billionaire things.
He’s “just investing in his costly plans to colonize Mars”…..yes not at all like a billionairehttps://twitter.com/buzzfeed/status/1502024072976347141 …— Megan Gibbs (@Megan Gibbs) 1646949806
Honestly, Grimes could have saved a lot face and just said what we all know is true:
Because that's what she and Musk both are regardless of how they choose to live.
