READ: After Royal Engagement, Humorous Conspiracy Theory Arises

The engagement of Prince Harry to actress Meghan Markle was a hot topic on social media yesterday, with many celebrities and politicians sending along their congrats and well wishes.

But for Twitter user Greg Pollowitz, an editor at Twitchy.com, a more sinister thought entered his mind, leading him to post a humorous conspiracy theory which quickly went viral.

As you may know, Ms. Markle is an American, meaning that if she and Prince Harry have children, they will technically be American citizens. But that's only the beginning of the far-fetched long con that Pollowitz theorized.

"Prince Harry's kids will be Americans. What if one grows up to be president and is in line for the throne at the same time? Brits are playing long-ball here, but it's a smart move. They want America back and this is how they'll do it," his tweet reads.

That's right, folks. According to Pollowitz, the engagement is just part of a massive conspiracy by Great Britain to reclaim the colony that they lost during the American Revolution.

Thanks to that one tweet, the Twitter hive mind was blown wide open:

And although Pollowitz wrote the tweet in jest, there were a few that couldn't take a joke:

And it even reignited the "birther" debate that has followed Barack Obama around for years:

Either way, the possibilities seem endlessly-ripe for drama, almost as if they were ripped straight from a few popular television series:

We can see it now:

But leave it to the Brits to spoil our fun. Even if they could technically somehow get America back, they basically said, "Nah, we're good:"

Well, maybe not all of them:

Thank you, Greg Pollowitz, for sparking such heated debate on Twitter. The British-American rivalry appears to be alive and well once more.

Please SHARE this with your friends and family.
