People Reveal Which 'Rich Person Foods' Actually Don't Taste Very Good

"Reddit user Casca_In_Red asked: 'What "rich person foods" actually aren't very good?'"

Did you read about the menu for the luxury boxes at the Super Bowl?

For a mere 2 million dollars, you can have expensive-sounding steak and bacon-wrapped pigs in a blanket.

FYI: You know can buy a box of them for $5 at ALDI.

I also love champagne.

I've been treated to bottles that cost $1000, but give me a $7 bottle of Andre any day.

Money doesn't always buy quality.

Redditor Casca_In_Red wanted to discuss pricey menu items that should be on a dollar menu, so they asked:

"What 'rich person foods' actually aren't very good?"

JAWS

"Shark's fin. It tastes like nothing. No flavor at all. Even the texture is just meh. The real flavor of Shark's fin soup comes from scallops and abalone, those are actually very good. But shark's fin is just trash."

So Faux

"Edible gold leaf is inert, indigestible, and has no taste or smell. It has no nutritional value and can't improve any dish. It isn't even that expensive. It is added to a lot of expensive dishes, often making a fairly normal dish more expensive, under the guise of adding to its 'presentation.'"

"It is also done as a gimmick (such as wrapping a steak in gold leaf and charging hundreds for it) to sucker trashy faux-rich people in. You literally s**t gold though, which is cool."

- Beetin

Inked

"There is a restaurant by my apartment that sells a $2,000 pizza. The ingredients sound absolutely disgusting and wholly unappetizing. Some of the ingredients included squid ink, caviar, and gold leaf. I've heard from some people who have reviewed it that it wasn't very good."

- stitchessnitches

No Stars

"Not sure if this counts but the one Michelin Star restaurant I went to charged us an additional €10 each for a green tea. Not some fancy green tea, they put a literal green tea bag in boiling water in a mug where the 'handle' didn’t even have a hole in it so you were grasping to this flat semi-circle attached to the side."

"It’s not even how you prep green tea, and the bag itself had instructions on how to do so. Admittedly the food and the rest of the experience was good but given that part of it all it makes me wonder just how overpriced the rest of the meal must’ve been. So my answer is green tea prepped at a French Michelin Star restaurant."

High-End Nonsense

"Brownies purchased at Sprouts."

- domclaudio

"There's a high-end grocery store near me. We mostly go there because they have a really good meat selection, but their desserts always look amazing. Cakes, cookies, brownies, etc. They don't taste as good as they look at it's not even close. I'll eat them and think 'I should be enjoying this more,', but at that price, I just don't buy the s**t anymore."

Bad Bumps

"Baby camel hump. It’s f**king greasy and awful. And sad."

- imfartandsmunny

"I googled it and it literally made me nauseous. And I am a human goat and will eat anything, but there’s something about the hump aspect."

I'll Take the Bus

"Subway sandwiches are now $15 and I nominate them to be considered 'rich people food.' As such, it’s not very good for $15. Remember the $5 foot long? Like what, 10 years ago? lol. Inflation isn’t 300% over the last 10 years anywhere except the fast food industry."

- murderisbadforyou

"Subway is one of the few restaurants where I work so we order from there occasionally. When we do we order online and use a coupon. Either the buy one get one, 3 for 17.99, 2 for 12, etc. It helps to cut the cost down cause they’re getting expensive. This is in the US though. I’m not sure about other countries."

- Oniyuki89

Wedges

"F**k every restaurant that serves Caesar Salad, or any salad, as a giant uncut wedge of lettuce with the fixings sprinkled on top.
The nicer the restaurant, the less prepared it is."

- seancbo

"Wedge salads leave me conflicted. I like getting fajitas and assembling them at the table myself. Meanwhile, the wedge salad is like a planned demolition project where one wrong move gets bleu cheese in your lap."

- kotanu

Fruit of Thrones

"Dragon fruit is quite expensive where I live since it’s imported. It’s also super hyped as a health food but tastes of nothing, just water."

- kodak1999

"Red dragon fruit is flavorless, yellow is sweet and delicious. I used to buy red occasionally and couldn't figure out why anybody wanted it like you said - no flavor. Then I tried one of the less cool-looking yellow ones, and I quickly realized why people enjoy it."

- petmoo23

"There is no fruit with a greater disparity between how good it looks and how bland it tastes. I was so excited the first time I bought a dragon fruit and so disappointed when I ate it. Now figs, on the other hand, look awesome and taste awesome. Great to decorate a baked good and delicious to eat."

Ribbed

"Every time a question like this comes up I think about this cheap place that makes the best ribs in the world. (Or used to, it was more than 5 years ago) the place ruined ribs for me because nowhere near me there is anything close to them (near as in my country) tried dozens of places. I think about those ribs on average at least once a month and even sometimes check the plane and hotel prices to maybe go back just for the ribs but it's too much money 🙁."

Variations

"Something I’ve noticed is most people commenting on various foods have probably not had 'good' versions of them. There is good pâté most is pretty terrible, same with caviar. Oysters have huge varieties in flavor and should only be eaten fresh in certain months depending on the fishery they’re harvested from. If you get fresh oysters from a good fishery, they can be delicious. They can also be terrible, muddy garbage and dangerous out of season."

"A lot of 'rich people' food is seasonal and people trying it may not be trying it in the right season or be getting low-quality versions of said product. I’ve only picked a few that dominated the threads, but it’s something to keep in mind. There are also personal tastes involved. I have a small variety of common foods I can’t stand that is weird to most people, but I’ll eat far more 'strange' things than most people."

Top Dollar Mess

Abalone... I'm ethnic Chinese and I don't like it. The Chinese will go on and on about it and pay top dollar for it. All I know is that the damned things look like the old-timey Chinese gold and silver ingots that caused them to be over-harvested to the point of near extinction."

- bearyken

"Ah, one of my dad’s favorites! There are different kinds. His parents owned a seafood restaurant and he’d have fried abalone sandwiches almost any day. The last time he had it was probably 20 years ago, and it was $60. He’s still sad about the over-harvest of US west coast abalone. It’s really different than the smaller ones you can find in Asia."

- Pinkmongoose

Perfectly Aged

"Excessively aged whiskies. Whiskies don't get better and better the older they get. Some styles (e.g., Islay's) peak at well under 20 years and get progressively worse as they age. The longer you age a whisky, the more it tastes like wood (in a bad way)."

"However, aging whisky past its prime still raises costs. Casks need to be tended for decades. Yields continually decrease. The fact that such whiskies are low volume and low demand also contributes. Even though they don't taste as good, excessively aged whiskies do cost significantly more to produce and distribute."

Poisoned Tingles

"Fugu. 'So good your mouth tingles.'"

No, that’s just what the poison tastes like."

- varthalon

"Deep-fried Fugu is fantastic. Farmed fugu also tastes pretty great in season and has low poison so no tingling sensation."

- DonDonburi

Fugu? No. There are exotic fishes and plants that places serve as "delicacies" that can kill a person if prepared wrong by a centimeter.

If it's going to threaten my life... then I'll stick with cheese.

What's the point of affording rich food if it kills you?

The dollar menu has many wonderful options.

Just a thought.
