The 92nd Academy Awards brought us endless laughter, tears and most importantly, shade.

A good chunk of that was directed towards rapper and Oscar winner Eminem, after his weirdly random appearance at Sunday's show.

Eminem, aka Marshall Mathers, followed a very heartfelt montage of iconic film songs with his rendition of "Lose Yourself".

The song had previously won the Oscar for Best Original Song back in 2003. However, the performance still seemed to be strangely out of place and was pointed out very quickly by Twitter.

The rapper, despite winning the Oscar back then, was making his first appearance at the Academy Awards. Eminem may not have shown up to receive his award in 2003, but he's definitely made an impression this year.

Following the performance, he posted a tweet apologizing for his absence.

Eminem went to explain further.

"I kinda figured maybe since I didn't get a chance to do it at the time, maybe it would be cool," he said in an interview with Variety.

"Back then, I never even thought that I had a chance to win, and we had just performed 'Lose Yourself' on the Grammys with The Roots a couple of weeks before the Oscars, so we didn't think it was a good idea. And also, back at that time, the younger me didn't really feel like a show like that would understand me."
"But then when I found out I won, 'That's crazy!' That to me shows how authentic and real that award is — when you don't show up and you still win. That makes it very real to me."

8 Mile was included in the soundtrack highlight reel, and Eminem was approached to perform. He said that the appearance was intended to be a surprise.

People were definitely surprised.

Either way, Eminem doesn't really need to defend himself. He did get a standing ovation, after all.
