One Reddit user asked:
"What's the closest you've come to death?"
... we are fragile, fragile creatures who are often our own worst enemies.
531 Days
Overdosed. Essentially was dead. Ex gf found me on the couch, blue, lips were gray and dried. I had inhaled a ridiculous amount of vomit as well. I was out cold on the couch for 4 hours so how I survived, is an absolute miracle.
I remember giving myself the shot. I felt instantly "oh f*ck this is gonna be bad...." that's it.
Woke up to paramedics and police surrounding me. My gf at the time sobbing in the corner.
Being brought back to life HURTS. They gave me narcan and were doing CPR. But I remember waking up and coughing out vomit and that made me puke more.
Took me to the hospital. That girl climbed in bed with me until they made her leave. She's a great person.
That was 2017. Today I am 531 days completely sober.
Aspirin And Her Airway
Animated GIF GiphyA sudden anaphylactic reaction to aspirin. My husband drove me to the hospital with his hand down my throat to keep my airway open.
My tongue swelled up so big that it filled my mouth and then some. He shoved his hand in and pressed my tongue down with his fingers to make an opening for air, and it saved my life.
I had to be resuscitated in the emergency room.
This Might Be Serious
I woke up one morning with a tightness and burning in my chest and felt it was hard to breathe.
I thought I might be getting a cold or maybe a respiratory infection (I had one a year before with similar symptoms and went to the ER thinking it was a heart attack). I drove 15 miles to work and punched in.
I started feeling worse and told my boss I was sick and had to go home. Halfway home I realized, this might be serious, I should go to the ER to get checked out.
I called my wife and told her I was headed to the hospital and drove myself the 20 miles. I walked in and told them what was happening and they wisked me into a room and gave me an EKG.
I was then informed I was going to the cath lab and that's the last I remember.
I woke up in a cardiac recovery unit with 2 stents and was told my main artery (what they call the widow maker) was 99% blocked. Apparently if I had arrived at the ER any later I would have mist likely died.
Spitting In Class
I used to, and still do but not as bad, have a terrible habit of chewing on the caps of pens.
The little stick part that is for clipping to your pocket I would break off and chew on those. I even had my preferred pen for that. Anyhow, one time I am in class not paying attention as you do and I accidentally swallowed that little stick.
Sideways.
At first there was this moment of "Well, of course that did not just happen" and that slowly turned into my brain figuring out what exactly was happening.
I forced a cough, nothing. Little panic starts to kick in and I force another cough and it dislodges and I am able to spit it out.
Teacher saw me spit it out and gave me a write up for spitting and even tho I tried to explain that I almost died she took it as a "way to get out of trouble"
Grandparents found out I was spitting in class and got grounded for the rest of the school year.
Back To The Water
big wave surfing surf GIF GiphyJanuary 5 2009 around 7am.
South of Costa Rica. I got caught by a wave while surfing and I ran out of oxygen during the wipeout.
When I accepted death I saw the surface. After swimming to the shore, still dizzy, I got back to the water so I wouldn't allow the fear to become a trauma.
A Hay Truck
I was running next to a hay truck at a bluegrass festival somewhere in Central California. I tripped.
In my childhood stupidity I rolled over the wrong way and it drove over the left side of my body.
I'm not religious but I somehow came out of it barely scathed. Had no broken bones and nothing but some blood in my bladder which went away.
Kebab
I was putting a new floor in the hayloft of the barn directly above my mothers antique storage area when the beam underneath me gave way (powder post beetles) and I fell 10 feet and landed on my back on the concrete floor below.
I looked to my left and six inches away was this 3' tall antique lightening rod that used to be on my grandfathers barn.
If I had landed a foot to my left I would have been a human sish kebab.
Before I Could Get Help
I had a postpartum hemorrhage four hours after the birth of my son.
It was really effing scary for my husband and I, but at least we were still in the hospital and I was eventually fine after a few blood transfusions and an extended stay.
Four years later, I miscarried at 12 weeks. I had a D&C and was cleared after my two week follow up.
I was brushing my teeth before work two days later and I hemorrhaged in my bathroom. It was just my son and I home at the time and I thought I was going to pass out before I could get help.
Fortunately, I made it to the hospital in time and, after some really sh*tty circumstances, I'm happy to be alive!
We realized how lucky we are to have my son and have accepted that our family may expand one day by way of adoption, but I won't be bearing any more children.

An Extra $200
This past summer I started driving to work, got about 3 blocks and my low battery symbol started blinking like crazy.
I decided I should turn back around and see what was up. Before I even got home, my power steering had cut out, the low battery symbol was going nuts, and several other things were blinking. Managed to get home, opened the hood and discovered that the serpentine belt had completely blown and was just hanging there.
So then I decided I would take the cheap route, go buy a serpentine belt, and replace it with some help from my dad.
We jacked up the car, took off the front passenger tire, and figured out the route for the belt. We had my Dad working from the top of the hood, while I had wriggled under so that my head was sitting inside the wheel well right next to the part you connect the tire onto.
After failing to get the belt in place, I moved out to look from the top and see what was stopping us. Before I had even stood up, the jack holding up my car twisted and front passenger quarter of the car slammed against the ground and the curb.
Literally, less than one minute after I had moved out from under that wheel well. If I'd kept trying for another minute, my head would have been completely crushed by my own car and I figure I almost certainly would have died.
At that point, I just said "f*ck this, tow the god damn thing to the mechanics."
We jacked the car back up, put the tire on, and I called a two truck company. Cost me an extra $200, but that's a hell of a lot better than costing me my head.
A UTI
I assumed it was the flu, I had a fever, body aches, muscle weakness a headache from HELL. I had just had our second son and assumed the blood in my urine was from still recovering.
My husband kept the kiddos away from me, but checked on me every few hours to bring me broth and tea and check my temp.
At 1145p he checked my temp and it was 104 I was lethargic and pale (I'm already super pale as it is, he said I looked dead) I was cold to the touch.
He called my inlaws who thankfully lived a few blocks away, they rushed over to take care of the babies and he carried me to his truck and rushed me to the ER.
I actually had a UTI (I have never had one and i had no pain or discolor in my urine except for the blood) my kidneys were failing and my lungs were filing with fluid. I was in the ICU for 8 days.
They said had he not checked on me when he did I would have died in my sleep. Scariest f*cking thing we have ever experienced.
I don't remember much except for not feeling well and being in and out of it while trying to rest. I remember waking up in the ICU puking my guts out because they gave me morphine (I rarely even take tylenol) they were suprised I came to so fast.
Had to take childrens motrin the rest of my stay and I was hooked up to tons of machines and had constant fluids to keep me hydrated.
