Chappell Roan and her parents joined host Zane Lowe for Apple TV+'s A Carpool Karaoke Christmas, and the singer's dad got visibly emotional talking about his daughter's impact on him after belting out "Pink Pony Club."

Singer Chappell Roan's proud dad fought back tears while beaming about her success and empowering impact on fans during an emotional episode of A Carpool Karaoke Christmas, now streaming on Apple TV+.

Roan's career trajectory took off when her 2023 debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, slow-burned its way to the top of the charts this summer. It landed her the 2024 VMA for Best New Artist, an accolade she credited to the supportive LGBTQ+ and drag community that inspired her music.

On the holiday-themed Carpool Karaoke, a gimmick first made famous by former Late Late Show host James Corden, Roan sang her hit tune "Pink Pony Club" while her parents sang along from the backseat.

The song was released in 2020 and is about a woman leaving Tennessee and becoming a stripper in LA against her mother's wishes.

When they finished singing, Apple Music's Zane Lowe, who was in the driver seat, asked Roan's mom, Kara, what she thought of the song when it first came out, given that she had a "huge role" in it.

"It's kind of emotional actually," Kara said and continued:

"We love her so much, and we're so proud of what she does, and who she is, and what she stands for."
"I love singing it with her at her shows. You can just see... the people just respond to that song so much."

Roan's father, Dwight Amstutz, a registered nurse who runs a family practice in Springfield, Missouri, got emotional and struggled to find his words.

"I think about this a lot and try not to get emotional about it," said Amstutz and wiped away tears.

"What she stands for is a lot of hope," he continued.

"But what she has taught me as a father is respect for other people, and all people. And that's what I want people to understand."
"Everything that is about her is about loving everybody. And she has taught me that."

The inspiration behind "Pink Pony Club" came from her visit in 2018 to a gay bar called "The Abbey" in the LGBTQ+ district of West Hollywood in LA.

She said that being at the bar and enamored of the go-go dancers there was an experience that was “different from home where I always had such a hard time being myself and felt like I’d be judged for being different or being creative."

Roan told Headliner:

"Everyone was having a great time; it was magical. I just felt like I belonged there, and that really changed my life."
"It’s something that I couldn't really have experienced here in Missouri – in my small town at least. It was completely eye opening and changed my direction from that point on."

The surprise hour-long episode of "A Carpool Karaoke Christmas" also featured powerhouse music artists Lady Gaga and Dua Lipa.

It is available for streaming on Apple TV+.
