One thing about actor Brian Cox? He is absolutely unbothered about ruffling feathers.
The outspoken star of HBO's Successionhas riled up the masses several times, but his latest rhetorical jab has upset arguably the most sensitive crew of all: conservative Christians.
Cox, you see, has a hot take on the Bible. In short: Booooo! *throws tomatoes* And as for the Bible's legion of stans? Well... he basically called them "stupid."
You can probably imagine how well this has all gone over.
Brian Cox: on God, Trump, cannabis laws, Succession, the patriarchy and moreyoutu.be
Cox made the comments during an appearance on "The Starting Line" podcast, in which he said the Bible and those who believe in God are "holding us back" as a society.
He told podcast host Rich Leigh:
“If God says this and God does that, and you go, ‘Well, what is God?’ We’ve created that idea of God, and we’ve created it as a control issue."
He then criticized the Bible as "patriarchal" and "propaganda" before coming out even harder against it.
Citing the Biblical story of Adam and Eve and the plot point of Eve being made from Adam's rib, which relies on a total suspension of belief in everything we know to be true about science, reproduction and our own day-to-day lives, Cox said:
"The Bible is one of the worst books ever, for me, for my point of view... And [people] believe it, because they’re stupid enough..."
“They need [belief], but they don’t need to be told lies. They need some kind of truth, and that is not the truth... It is not the truth; it’s a mythology.”
That is definitely a hot take, and boy did it have Christians hoppin' mad. But pretty much everyone else online had nothing but praise for Cox.
Wouldn\u2019t get published today, because of woke— (@)
Previously, Cox outspokenly jumped on the ideological bandwagon of people who complain about "woke" ruining everything and who believe JK Rowling has a point with her bizarrely obsessive transphobia.
So let's be cautious about lionizing Cox as a genius. But even broken clocks are right twice a day, as the saying goes. Tick tock!
