It's almost a social media trope.
We've all seen them—a post with screenshots of a note app that starts talking about a man in Hollywood, or the music industry or sports.
Most of the posts with that format are going to shine a light on a negative aspect of the industry and the man in question.
However, a recent post about actor/director Bill Hader turned out to be the exact opposite. The post praised him as a director as the series finale of his show Barry wrapped up production.
The post was made on the Instagram account IA Stories.
IA Stories is an account where "TV/Film workers share stories [anonymously] about our work environments to build solidarity across crews/crafts."
“Add Bill Hader to the list of Hollywood directors who treat their crew like humans and aren’t assholes.”— Amrita Khalid (@Amrita Khalid) 1686172863
The person wrote:
"[Bill Hader] knows firsthand how much of a beating the crew can take when a director comes in ill-prepared. Bill worked extensively in prep and always came to set knowing exactly what he wanted."

They added:
"When you work for someone like that, you want to do your best work."

They noted leadership sets the tone.
"Every single person on the cast and crew were some of the loveliest people on the planet, and it all comes from the top."

Fans of Hader were wary of the set up of the post.
It looks like so many others that exposed men behaving badly.
“@askhalid Goddammit, don't scare me with the first half of a sentence like that lol”— Amrita Khalid (@Amrita Khalid) 1686172863
“@askhalid @Gwenda Whew, I was a bit worried when I started skimming the text”— Amrita Khalid (@Amrita Khalid) 1686172863
Others were just there for the outpouring of compliments about Hader.
“@askhalid @KevOContent I devoured every interview I could find and every single one with a comments section has some anonymous crew member praising Bill and the filming environment. And I believe Henry also praised him for giving them short days.”— Amrita Khalid (@Amrita Khalid) 1686172863
“@askhalid I didnt think I could love Bill Hader any more, but I was proven wrong today. Thank you!”— Amrita Khalid (@Amrita Khalid) 1686172863
“@askhalid I say this all the time but I can’t not talk about it constantly. Bill Hader is the nicest, most radiant human being I have ever met in my entire life. Incredibly, effortlessly kind.”— Amrita Khalid (@Amrita Khalid) 1686172863
Some shared their own personal stories of working with Hader.
“@askhalid I was an extra on a Bill Hader project 15 years ago. When the shoot got delayed a few hours he spent the whole time hanging out with the extras and answered everybody's questions about SNL and Superbad. Lovely guy.”— Amrita Khalid (@Amrita Khalid) 1686172863
“@askhalid I’m one of the lucky actors that got to work with Hader & the rest of the amazing crew. I can forever say that Season 4 started on my face! Everyone was so pleasant. I agree with your tweet, working with people like this makes you work even harder.”— Amrita Khalid (@Amrita Khalid) 1686172863
“@askhalid Agreed. Even working as background, Barry was one of the best sets to work on. And I’m not saying that just cause I got to spend a full day with Henry Winkler on stage. Every day there, even the long waiting ones, was good.”— Amrita Khalid (@Amrita Khalid) 1686172863
Others commented Hader offers a glimpse of what working conditions in Hollywood should be.
“@askhalid @Charlotte_Stein It's almost like a set doesn't have to be a dumpster fire if the show runners do I want it to be. 🤔 Weird.”— Amrita Khalid (@Amrita Khalid) 1686172863
“@askhalid Thanks for the insider take. Given all the talk in recent years about reconciling “great art” made my men who behaved horribly, it’s interesting to note that being a decent human being can elevate the artistic output. I too am impatient for Bill’s next project.”— Amrita Khalid (@Amrita Khalid) 1686172863
The series finale of Barry premiered on May 28, 2023.
